Space BD Selected as Contractor for JAXA’s “High-Quality Protein Crystal Growth Experiment Operations (Starting FY2025)”

Space BD Inc., a space business operator that provides various services including satellite launches and microgravity research on the ISS, is pleased to announce that it has been selected as a contractor for the “High-Quality Protein Crystal Growth Experiment Operations (Starting FY2025)” project conducted by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA).
Through this project, in addition to ensuring steady execution of operations, we will further deepen the operational expertise we have cultivated in high-quality protein crystal growth experiments (PCG), while achieving further enhancement of the operational capabilities required of a service provider, including user integration services, with an eye towards the post-ISS era.
◾️Protein Crystal Growth Experiments Utilizing ISS “Kibo”
In 2021, Space BD was selected as the sole private partner for JAXA’s open call for proposals to select private partners for high-quality protein crystal growth experiment operations onboard the ISS’ Japanese Experimental Module, “Kibo”, serving in this role from FY2021 through FY2024. In partnership with JAXA and Maruwa Nutrition Foods, we have conducted on-orbit experiments for over 600 samples in total.
This project leverages the microgravity environment to enable high-quality protein crystallization that cannot be achieved on the ground, contributing to shortened drug development processes and cost reductions. Moving forward, we will continue to address societal challenges on Earth by providing high-value-added services that harness the unique characteristics of space.
